Japanese maple, known in Latin as Acer palmatum, is a fast growing small tree with thin bark and five lobed leaves that change colour with the seasons and fall in autumn. It is used to warmer climates but likes the shade so grows well indoors, as well as outdoors when protected from frost.
In hot weather they can be watered multiple times a day but they will not need watering daily in cooler conditions. They respond well to fertilisers during their growing season however this will cause longer internodes which may not be desired.
Pruning can be done year round but branches are best cut during summer or autumn when they can recover faster. Repotting should be done in early spring just before the buds begin to swell.
This seed pack contains 5 seeds. The seeds will need to be cold stratified at refrigerator temperature for 100 days for germination to take place. Find out more about the stratification process here.
